Why Hand Cooked?

With the sounds of sizzling meat, the crunch, snaps and chops of our chefs preparing each recipe by hand, the steam filling the room with tantalisingly good smells. You would be forgiven thinking this was a kitchen in a busy restaurant. We are the only company in the UK that cooks dog food in a pan by hand with no industrial processes, just real cooking. Here’s a glimpse into the process of making Different Dog….

Why hand cooked?

The Process

We add meat into our pan and cook at 80 degrees

We cook our meat for 20 minutes using a paddle to break down any lumps if necessary

After 20 minutes we check the temperature of meat using a meat probe and repeat every 10 minutes

Once the meat has reaches 90 degrees, we then add root vegetables and cook for a further 5-10 minutes

We then add leafed veg and cook for a further 5 minutes

Once meat and veg is cooked we add our dry superfoods, fruit, mushrooms and oil

The recipe is then stirred until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed in

Once each tub has been lovingly hand filled, we then blast freeze our meals to lock in all that natural goodness and naturally preserve the product.

Our Story

Back in 2015 I worked in the dog food industry. I got to know manufacturers, visit factories and understand how dog food is made. The more I learned, the more concerned I became.

We all know that you are what you eat. Yet we continue to feed our dogs the same food day in, day out. Often the shelf life is measured in years, and the food doesn’t even need to go in the fridge. What’s more, it doesn’t seem to have changed in years.

When we got our new puppy, Crumble, it didn't feel right to give her processed food. So we started making food for her ourselves, as we do for our children. She loved it and thrived on it. We started making it for her friends as well, and they all loved it too. People told us their dogs had shinier coats, better digestion and more bounce. So we decided to help as many dogs as we could by setting up Different Dog.
