What is Different Dog?
We are a family business, based in Shrewsbury, on a mission to get the nation's tails wagging with fresh, gently cooked dog food. All our meals are made by hand in small batches, nutritionally balanced by our very own vet and pet nutritionist, packed full of flavour and delivered frozen to your door. We are regularly creating new exciting seasonal recipes every month, and we are the first dog food company to do this.
Why are we different?
We founded Different Dog to make dogs healthier and happier. We believe our four legged friends deserve the same quality of food as the rest of the family – and they're not currently getting it.
Home cooking for dogs: We use the same fresh ingredients and methods you would at home to cook your family meals. Look for the name on the label of every dish to see which chef prepared your dog's food.
Fresh and natural: Once defrosted, our food requires refrigeration and will only last for 5 days, much the same as if you had made a casserole yourself. Most dog foods have a two year shelf life - that makes us feel queasy.
Our quality, your peace of mind: We are regularly taking our food to the lab for testing, and we use the results to improve the nutritional value of our food. We make over a hundred recipes a year, and we learn from them all. No one else is doing this.
Healthy, seasonal variety: We are the first to provide a truly varied diet, by cooking new recipes every month. This enables us to use seasonal ingredients and strengthens your dog's internal microbiome, an important factor in overall health.
Tailor-made: Our subscription service creates a diet tailored just for your dog, which ensures they are healthy, happy and feeling that extra bit special.

Why cooked?
Our gentle cooking process preserves the vitamins and minerals naturally found in our natural ingredients, ensuring the food is not only fresher and more nutrient rich than processed food but also delicious and digestible for dogs of all shapes and sizes. It also removes any microbiological risks that might be associated with uncooked food.

Why variety?
Variety is extremely important for a healthy digestive system. The microbiome is a complex colony of micro-organisms in your dog’s gastro intestinal tract, which forms a protective barrier against toxins, carcinogens and allergens. Emerging scientific thinking suggests the more diversity within a diet, the stronger your dog’s microbiome, leading to a healthier and happier dog.
Increasing variety should be a gentle process especially if your dog has not been used to it, so slow and steady introduction is recommended. Follow our simple guide ‘How to introduce your dog to their new diet’
Why frozen?
To keep things fresh! Freezing preserves taste and nutrition without using chemicals. Our food is frozen straight after cooking to ensure it is in tip top condition when defrosted. There is a growing recognition that frozen food typically degenerates less than refrigerated food, which may take a week or more to get from farm to fork. We are more often hearing the phrase: “If you want fresh, choose frozen”.
Why can’t I prepare similar food at home?
The simple answer is you can, however in today’s busy world it is often hard to find the time to do this properly. Dogs have complex dietary needs and it is critical for their health that they receive the correct balance of minerals and vitamins.
All our recipes have been created with our own highly qualified pet nutritionist to give you the peace of mind that your dog is getting the balanced nutrition they need, whilst giving you more time to enjoy with them. One of the reasons we set up Different Dog is because we recognise there are thousands of people who are home cooking for their dog, and we worry that they may not be getting it quite right. We’re here to help!
Do I need to consult my vet before using Different Dog?
This is not necessary if your dog has no health issues but sure, go ahead, we’d love your vet to know about our food!
If your dog does have a health issue or you have any questions please contact us – we love chatting about dogs! We also have our very own vet and nutritionist on the team to ensure your questions are properly answered.
What ingredients are used?
There’s a lot of confusing information about what’s actually in a lot of dog foods out there. We’re here to provide good honest food for your dog, using only the freshest ingredients, with no generic ‘meat meal’, ‘animal derivatives’ or ‘fillers’ in sight. All our recipes are grain free and contain at least 60% fresh chicken, lamb, beef or turkey. Seasonal fruit and veg, herbs, quality oils, superfoods, vitamins and minerals make up the rest of our complete and balanced diet.
We care passionately about quality sourcing and sustainability, and we love British farmers, so where possible we source from the beautiful Shropshire and Welsh countryside right outside our kitchen door. This helps us minimize the time from the farmer’s field to your dog’s bowl, to make it as fresh and tasty as possible.
Why does my dog need fruit & veg?
Fruit, veg and herbs are stuffed full of vitamins and antioxidants, as well as tasting delicious to dogs. They play an important role in ensuring a balanced diet.
My dog has a sensitive stomach is your food suitable?
Our food is highly bioavailable and easy to digest, so many dogs with sensitive tummies do very well on our low fat options - if you're looking for sensitive stomach dog food contact the team today for your own dogs personalised diet programme.
Are your foods hypoallergenic?
My dog is on a diet, can I use your food?
What sort of dog food is Different Dog?
It's not dry, wet or raw dog food. It's a cooked frozen food.
It's completely different to traditional dog food, which is why we called it Different Dog. Think of it as a ready meal for your dog, cooked by hand with love.
Can I mix your food with my current food?
Absolutely!
Many of our customers use our food as a tasty topper to serve up with their current food. Your dog gets a hit of fresh natural goodness every day, as well as enjoying their food more than ever!
How should I make the switch?
The time required to transition your dog from commercial dog food to fresh can vary depending on the age and sensitivity of your dog, but in general, we recommend a steady transition over two weeks.
Here at Different Dog we recognise that each dog is an individual. As well as giving you a clear transition plan when you subscribe, we encourage our owners to monitor their dogs during this transition process as some may take a little longer than others to switch to a new diet. If you have any concerns during this time please contact the team who can guide you through your dogs personalised meal plans.
How much should I feed my dog?
When you sign up we ask a number of questions, such as your dog’s weight, age and activity level, so we can calculate how many calories your dog needs each day. But of course, every dog is different. If you think your dog is getting too much or not enough food please let us know as soon as possible and we can adjust their portion sizes for the following week.
Do I have to prepare anything?
No, we’ve done all the hard work for you. Simply defrost, open the pot and spoon into a bowl for your canine buddy. We appreciate everyone has busy lives so we’ve made it as simple as possible for you, and as healthy and delicious as possible for your hound. Convenience without compromise.
How do I defrost the food?
Place the food into the fridge for at least 24 hours before it’s needed. If you forget to do this then place the pot in a bowl of warm water for 5 minutes before serving. Once defrosted the food will remain fresh for 5 days.
When your delivery arrives, we recommend you put 2 days worth of food into the fridge, then each time you use a meal replace it with a frozen one. If the food arrives chilled not fully frozen, don’t worry, it is still safe and can be put back into the freezer.
Can I recycle the packaging?
We care as passionately about the environment as we do about dogs, which is why all our packaging is recyclable or biodegradable.
The boxes can be recycled, the sheep’s wool insulation in your box is recyclable and makes great compost, and all our pots are either compostable or recyclable. Not only are you feeding your dog super food but helping save the planet too.
How often do you deliver?
Deliveries range from once a month to once a week, depending on your dog’s personalised plan. You can order up until Sunday night to get your food the following Friday.
What happens if I am not there?
Your dog’s food will arrive in an insulated box so don't worry if you aren't there in the day to recieve it. Our eco-friendly packaging and insulation have all been designed to keep your pup's delicious food at pawfect temperature on their journey to your freezer.
As soon as you do get home make sure you put it in the fridge or freezer. Our rule of paw is that as long as the pots are cool to the touch when you receive them (even if the food is soft), they can be safely popped away in your freezer and used as normal.
If you have any delivery issues please get in touch with our Customer Delight team as soon as possible.
What happens if I go away or on holiday?
By all means take Different Dog with you and store in a cool box or fridge freezer if you have one available, or if you prefer we can pause your subscription until you return. Just log in to our website to arrange this.
How much does it cost?
Price depends on the size and appetite of your dog, however, our food starts at £1.80 per day, less than the cost of a nice cup of coffee. If you opt for our Tasty Topper (we give you a quarter of your dog’s daily calories) it can be as little as 50p per day.
Where do you deliver to?
Mainland UK.
